Archie jokes always make sense–why doesn’t this Suzie joke make sense?!? Why “299” and “450”? Maybe round numbers like “500” or “1,000” would make a little more sense for the shoes on sale and maybe “133” or some other random number for the shoes tried on. And aren’t they “PAIRS of shoes”? Even in the 50’s, wouldn’t they still be considered “pairs of shoes”? The numbers and the phrasing both make the reader wonder if there’s some other meaning, at least at first glance. Argh! I mean…oh, Suzie.
